My Favorite Parenting Books Every Mom Should Read

My Favorite Parenting Books Every Mom Should Read

If you’ve ever searched “best parenting books for moms,” you already know how overwhelming the options can be. There are thousands of parenting books promising calmer toddlers, stronger attachment or less stress. But SO MANY of them are boring as sh*t or full of fluffy advice that doesn't actually help.

I love reading (and audiobooks.) If I'm walking the dogs or doing the dishes, I'm listening to an audiobook to keep me company and keep me sane. But, I'm pretty picky when it comes to self help type books. Specifically parenting books, they need to be practical, insightful, and actually helpful in real life. And they can't be boring!

So after reading through several popular parenting and motherhood books, these are the ones I genuinely think are worth your time. Whether you're a first-time mom, raising toddlers, or just looking for parenting books that don't suck, these are the books that I have enjoyed.

hunt gather parent book review

Hunt, Gather, Parent

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: parents of toddlers, babies and younger children.

If you’re looking for a parenting book that offers a completely different perspective on raising kids, this one is incredibly interesting.

Hunt, Gather, Parent explores parenting approaches from cultures around the world and compares them to modern Western parenting. The book focuses on raising calm, capable, cooperative children without constant yelling, punishment, rewards, or power struggles.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was learning how children can naturally become more independent and helpful when they’re included in everyday life instead of constantly entertained or managed.

I also appreciated that the advice felt practical rather than overly complicated. There were several parenting tools and mindset shifts I immediately understood and could apply in daily life.

That said, some sections did feel repetitive, and there were a few ideas I personally didn’t fully agree with. But overall, I still found it informative, eye-opening, and worth reading.

What I loved about this parenting book:

  • Encourages calmer parenting
  • Offers practical toddler parenting tools
  • Focuses on independence and cooperation
  • Introduces parenting styles from different cultures

raising secruely attached kids book review

Raising Securely Attached Kids

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: parents of any aged children.

I learned a lot about what secure attachment is, and this book provided me with a lot of tools and ideas for how to create a secure attachment with my child.

It is also an exercise in reflection on your own upbringing, which really stood out to me. It naturally encourages you to think about how your own childhood experiences may be shaping the way you parent today, and how that shows up in your connection with your child.

My biggest takeaways from this parenting book:

  • Secure attachment is something you actively build through everyday interactions
  • Practical tools can help strengthen the bond with your child
  • Reflecting on your own upbringing is an important part of parenting growth
  • Awareness of your patterns can support a more secure connection with your child

outdoor kids in an inside world book review

Outdoor Kids in an Inside World

⭐⭐⭐
Good for: rural and urban families.

I got exactly what I wanted from this book. It left me feeling genuinely inspired to get outside more and focus on building a stronger connection with nature alongside my child.

The overall message is really motivating without feeling overwhelming. It gives you that little push to step away from screens and routines and just prioritize being outdoors more often, even in simple ways.

That said, some of the anecdotes felt a bit long, and a few chapters didn’t really apply to my life personally. For example, the sections around hunting weren’t relevant for me, so I zoned out a bit through those parts.

Even with that, the core message still came through clearly and made it worth reading.

My biggest takeaways from this parenting book:

  • Spending time outside doesn’t need to be complicated or perfectly planned
  • Building a connection to nature can start with small, everyday habits
  • Kids benefit from regular outdoor time, not just big “adventures”
  • You can take what applies to you and leave the rest

like a mother book review

Like a Mother

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: pregnant and first-time moms

Honestly, I learned more from this book than I did from all my pregnancy classes combined. Like, did you know the nipple has multiple holes not just one??

Like a Mother covers pregnancy, postpartum recovery, hormones, breastfeeding, and motherhood in a way that feels informative, empowering, and refreshingly honest.

One thing I really appreciated was the tone. It doesn’t come across as fear-based or overly dramatic. Instead, it presents research and information in a very straightforward and accessible way.

If you’re pregnant for the first time and want a pregnancy book that goes beyond the basics, this is one I would recommend.

What I loved about this pregnancy book:

  • Honest information about pregnancy and postpartum
  • Educational without being overwhelming
  • Covers hormones, recovery, and breastfeeding
  • Feels supportive and realistic
