Taking your baby to the pool for the first time is so exciting, we literally counted down the days after we booked our son's fist swimming lessons at four months old. But we learned A LOT during those first few swim sessions and every time we packed for the pool I was adding something else to the diaper bag or routine to make our lives easier.
So if you’re heading to your first swim lesson with your baby, here are some tips to make your first pool experience smoother, warmer, and way less stressful.
1. Bring Two Towels (Trust Us on This)
One baby towel is not enough.
-
Towel #1 is for immediately after the pool
-
Towel #2 is for after the shower or rinse
That first towel will be damp, cold, and slightly chlorine-scented. Having a dry one for the final wrap-up makes a huge difference in keeping your baby warm and happy. We love our soft muslin hooded baby towel.
2. Protect Sensitive Skin Before You Leave
If your baby has sensitive or dry skin, apply a thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor before leaving the house.
This acts as a barrier against chlorine and can help prevent irritation, especially for babies prone to eczema or dryness. It’s a small step that can save you from post-pool redness later. Especially when you are going week after week for lessons. I swear my sons skin would just start to look better and we would be heading back to the pool again.
3. Invest in a Long-Sleeve Rash guard for Your Baby
A long-sleeve rash guard is one of the most underrated swim essentials. It helps regulate body temperature, keeps the swim diaper in place and makes transitions in and out of the pool much smoother.
Look for one that:
-
Has long sleeves to keep your baby warmer in the water
-
Has buttons or snaps at the bottom for easy diaper changes (we love this one!)
4. Wear Your Swimsuit Under Your Clothes
Changing rooms with a baby are… an experience.
Save yourself the hassle and wear your swimsuit under your clothes to the pool. When it’s time to get in, you’re already halfway there, which means one less thing to manage while holding a wiggling baby.
5. Dress Your Baby in Their Rash guard Before You Leave
This is a game changer.
Dress your baby in their rash guard under their regular clothes before leaving the house. When you arrive, all you have to do is take off their clothing, and swap their diaper for a swim diaper.
Less changing. Less wrestling. Less stress.
6. Choose Baggy, Comfy Clothes (For Both of You)
Tight jeans and fitted tops after swimming are a terrible idea.
Dress both yourself and your baby in loose, comfortable clothing that’s easy to pull on when you’re damp. Think cozy pants, oversized sweaters, and anything you won’t have to fight with.
7. Keep a Dedicated Swim Bag Packed
If swim lessons are a weekly thing, don’t make yourself repack every time.
Use a separate, dedicated swim bag stocked with:
-
Extra swim diapers
-
Regular diapers
-
Your preferred baby soap
-
A spare change of clothes
When it’s always ready to go, swim days feel way more manageable.
8. Bring a Hooded Blanket or Cape for Cold Days
If it’s chilly outside, skip the full winter gear between the pool and the car.
A hooded blanket or Cape lets you wrap your baby up quickly and keep them warm without wrestling jackets, hats, and mittens onto a damp, wiggly baby.
Your baby’s first pool experience doesn’t have to be perfect to be successful. A little preparation, a few smart shortcuts, and realistic expectations go a long way.
If everyone leaves warm, fed, and mostly dry, that’s a win.
Welcome to swim parent life, you’re doing great 💙
